This is a Rectify Series drop-in speaker for both earlier Athearn Roundhouse-branded EM40 locomotives with 8-pin board and the current-production Athearn-branded EM40 models with NEXT18 motherboard. The speaker mounts into the roof of the cab with double-sided mounting tape.
The only sound decoders that will fit the early, 8-pin models are the LokSound 5 58823 Micro and 58923 Nano decoders with wires. A TCS KA1 can be installed next to the decoder (highly recommended).
The current-production EM40s with NEXT18 motherboard can use either the LokSound 5 58828 or Tsunami2 TSU-N18 decoders. The Nix Trainz Power Bridge III is the stay-alive for these versions. While these models do not require a full gut and install like the earlier 8-pin models, the electronics do need moved as explained in the EM40 guide here: https://www.scalesoundsystems.com/guides
